Welcome to the next Realm of Power!!!!
Okay, now that you have installed your new G3 I am sure you are asking yourself "well, just how fast am I running now"................ Just open up your new Mactell G3 Control Panel for your answer! In addition to posting your processor speed, backside cache speed, and temperature you can now modify the settings to get even more bang for your buck!
ÑI/O Button: This button should be pressed if you are using your machine as a busy network server or have a Adaptec 2930 or 2940 SCSI card connected. This will slow the performance somewhat, but will ensure a more stable unit while performing it's tasks. Note: Retrospect users should utilize this button without question.
Ñ60NS: This button should be used if you are confident in the fact that you are using 60 nanosecond RAM. This will allow for faster access times and speed up the computer. Using mixed speed RAM or 70 nanosecond RAM with this button depressed will not harm the unit, but no speed increase will occur.
Ñ70NS: This button should be used if you have 70 nanosecond RAM installed or mixed speeds of RAM. Using this button will allow for more optimized access timing and should increase the performance somewhat.
ÑMB CACHE ON and OFF: These buttons control your mother board cache. In some machines, with the Mactell G3 upgrade installed, we noticed and nice performance gain when we accessed the mother board cache. However, in other units the machine didn't respond well. Try both settings to determine whether or not you would benefit from this capability.
ÑG3 TYPE PB and LW: These two buttons will allow you to configure the type of G3 cache you are using to optimize it's capabilities. "PB" stands for Pipe Line and "LW" stands for Late Write. The two are very different so if you aren't sure which one you have please contact the manufacturer of your G3 for specifications.
ÑCACHE SIZE 1024K and 512K: This button allows you to change the amount of back side cache being used. We found that, depending on what tasking is involved, modifying the back side cache size can improve the performance. Note: You must have a 1024K back side cache to utilize this feature.
ÑL2 CACHE ON and OFF: This button actually allows you to use your L2 cache!!! In the early days of G3 upgrades it was necessary to physically remove the L2 cache from most machines, but now you have the option of actually using it. Note: In some machines we did notice a performance loss when using the L2 cache so try changing the settings from time to time to see if you notice a benefit or not.
ÑCACHE RATIO buttons: These buttons give you the biggest performance changes of the lot. The first time you open the Mactell G3 Control Panel the ratio setting will reflect what your G3 was designed to run at. In most G3s you now have the capability of changing the ratio (some higher and some lower) to get a performance jump! The ratios seriously effect the performance of your G3 depending on your tasking needs, so modify the settings to see what your optimum ratio needs are.
ÑSETTINGS: This button allows you to LOCK or UNLOCK your settings. Once you are finished configuring the Mactell G3 Control Panel simply press the SETTINGS button. If the button changes to "LOCK" you know that your configuration is safe and should allow for optimization of your system. However, if your configuration is........let's just say "less than stable" a red error message will appear notifying you of a potential problem.
ÑÑExtrasÑÑ
1. In this version of the Mactell G3 Control Panel you have the option of changing the temperature reading to reflect either Fahrenheit or Celsius degrees. This feature was included so that users around the world could benefit from this fantastic tool!!! Simply click on the "C" or "F" to change the gauge.
2. When changing the CACHE RATIO on a lower ratio machine to a faster ratio you may encounter an error message. If this is the case with your G3 it is now possible to force the ratio higher. Simply hold down the "option" key on your keyboard when selecting the ratio. Note: Sometimes forcing the ratio higher can cause your system to lock up. If this happens to you simply restart the machine and zap the PRAM. This should bring you back to your default configuration.
